No.5: Local’s Pick by Chikako (日本語あり）
Our fifth local interview is with Chikako.
5人目はChikakoさんです。
We met Chikako one day when Miho’s mom discovered her leather goods store tucked away in our neighborhood and wandered in like she often does. Her shop, Gashhu, is not easily noticeable from the street. From Onaridori, turn at the corner of the Kuronuma toy store and walk past Spice House PEPE and a house with a pond. At that point you should see Gashhu’s little sign sitting on the street pointing you down a sidewalk. In Kamakura, there are quite a few of these unique and wonderful shops in residential areas. It is unpretentious from the outside, and once you are in you are welcomed by a large selection of unique leather goods.
ある日美保の母が鎌倉を訪問中、私達の家のすぐ近くに、千賀子さんのお店Gasshuを発見しました。私達は何度もお店の前を通っていたのに、こんな近くに素敵な革屋さんがあることに全然気づいていませんでした。鎌倉は住宅街に、個性的なお店が埋まっている事が多々あります。Gasshu は、御成通りのおもちゃ屋さんくろぬまの横の道を真っ直ぐ行き、スパイスハウスぺぺの前を通り過ぎて、橋のある素敵なお家の隣にあります。開店中は道沿いに看板が出てるので、それを目印にお店入り口まで降りて行ってください。外から見ると普通のお家がGasshuです。
Chikako was born in Tokyo but grew up in Kamakura since the third grade. Her father used to own a leather goods shop in Tokyo and she has run a similar business before. When she opened this shop two years ago, she did so with a specific goal in mind. From her volunteer and work experience, she realized that people crave personal connections even when they are sick, depressed and find it hard to go outside of their homes. She wanted to create a safe space where people can easily stop by, connect with others, and gain some hope and energy. Her shop is filled with fun and interesting leather crafts that make you smile and want to ask questions about it. She named her shop Gasshu, based on the Japanese Kanji for Happiness and Seed. She hopes that people will find seeds of happiness while visiting her shop, become a seed themselves, and bloom elsewhere.
千賀子さんは生まれは東京、小学校3年生の時に鎌倉に引っ越してきました。もともとお父様が東京の六本木でレザーショップをやっていた関係で、過去にも革の仕事をされていたそうです。２年前に鎌倉にお店を開いた時、叶えたい願いがあったそうです。千賀子さんは過去のボランティアや職務経験から、人は病気なども含めて、心が落ち込んでしまいがちな時や、外に出る事や人に接するのが辛い時でも、実は誰かと繋がりたい気持ちはある。安心して行ける場所を欲している。そういう時に、誰しもが気軽に立ち寄って、ほっとできる場所を作りたい。元気のもとになるような作品がそこにあって、手に取ったりそれをきっかけに会話が始まったり、一息ついて寛げる場所を提供したい。そんな思いでお店をGasshu（“賀種”＝喜びの種、を見つけてもらえたり、来てくださった人たち自身が、また新たな種になって別の場所でまいたり咲かせたりをしてくださることを夢に描いて）と名付けたそうです。
Once you step into Gasshu, you will feel immediately at home. You will be welcomed by Chikako’s warm smile and her fun and unique leather products. It is such a comforting space. One sunny day, I remember sitting for a while on her deck, like I was visiting an old friend.
Gasshu has a great collection of leather crafts from artists whom Chicako has discovered, but the store also hosts various events and workshops in the atelier on the second floor. For details, please check her website and instagram.

What do you like about Kamakura?
Kamakura is surrounded by nature, filled with trees, plants, flowers, etc. It changes scenery and sounds throughout the seasons. Since the town is surrounded by mountains, there are many animals, too. Around my house in Hase, I have had a family of raccoons visit and frequently see squirrels running around. There are tons of insects too, some that I have no idea what they are called. Listening to the birds sing makes me realize I am living in the presence of nature.
鎌倉のどんなところが好きですか？ 自然に囲まれた生活が出来る事ですね。季節によって様変わりする木々や草花、景色の色や聞こえてくる音にも変化があります。山に囲まれてるので、動物達も色々いますからね。長谷の自宅の庭にはタヌキの家族が現れたり、、もちろんリスも走ったり飛んだりしてます。（笑）虫も名前のわからないのがたくさんいますよ。鳥の声など聞きながら、私たち、今を一緒に生きてるんだなぁと実感します。
Where is your favorite place to visit in Kamakura?
I knew about the Kamakura Literature Museum before it became open to the public because I grew up nearby. It was originally built as a vacation home for Marquis Maeda, and later was rented once to Prime Minister Sato. On weekends, I used to see security guards on the grounds and access was restricted. As a child, my friends and I would pretend that we lived there and we would take photographs of the beautiful mansion. Kamakura has some beautiful old buildings that have been repurposed. Another such building with wonderful grounds is Kogatei, which turned into a restaurant.
お気に入りの場所？ 鎌倉文学館は文学館として公開される前から、実家がすぐ近くなのでよく知っていて、憧れの洋館でした。もともと前田侯爵の別邸として建てられたものですが、佐藤栄作首相だった頃別荘としてお借りになっていましたね。週末になると警備のお巡りさんがよく立ってらっしゃいました。子どもの頃は中に入れなくて、素敵な建物と敷地をバックに門の前でお嬢様ごっこをして写真を撮ったりしていました（笑）鎌倉には他にも古い素敵な建物を、修復して再利用しているところがあります。レストランになった古我邸も素敵な建物とお庭ですね。
What is your favorite thing to do in Kamakura?
Kamakura is a fun town to stroll the alleyways off of the main streets. This town attracts creative and entrepreneurial people. You will find all sorts of shops, studios and ateliers that showcase interesting arts and crafts deep within residential area that are only open occasionally. In Kamakura, night comes early and it is very quiet compared to other cities, but I would like to explore more of the nightlife here as well.
鎌倉でお気に入りのアクティビティは何ですか？ この町は色々な事を楽しまれている人たちが多いです。私は他の人がやっている事を見たり聞いたりするのが面白くて、結構好きです。だから最近、あちこちの住宅地で小道に隠れたお店やギャラリーが出没してきているので、散歩がてら探索が楽しいですね。 夜がはやい街ですが、夜の鎌倉ももっと楽しみたいところです。
Where is your favorite place to eat, drink or buy good food to go?
There are two Italian restaurants in Hase close to where I live that I enjoy. Biotecca is the first one. They serve really good steaks. Symposion is the other, and it has a nice, traditional Japanese ambience and great food.
鎌倉でお気に入りの飲食店は？ 自宅に近い長谷にあるイタリアンのお店で２件、この頃よく行くところがあります。１件目はお肉がおいしいビオテッカ。ホントにもう、、、美味しいんですよ、お肉が〜。２件目は古民家を風情あるレストランにされているシンポジオン。こちらは落ち着いた大人の雰囲気で、決して気取ってはいないのですが、しみじみと物静かに味わいながら、美味しくいただいてます。
Where is your favorite shop?
Among all the shops in town, it is surprising that Kamakura has only a few carry out places. I have some recommendations. The first one is called Happy Deli, near Kinokuniya and above the Little Mermaid bakery. They have a good selection of veggie and meat dishes that go well with wine. Secondly, on the same street towards Hase is the Sasuke Store. This is a cute little shop that sells fresh veggies and some pre-made foods. For a quick lunch, I also like Kamakura Musubichaya on Yuigahama Street. They serve large yummy rice balls with various stuffings to choose from.
鎌倉でお気に入りのお店は？ 鎌倉は意外とお弁当やお惣菜屋さんが少ないのです。数件持ち帰りにおすすめのお店は、鎌倉西口、紀ノ国屋すぐお隣りの2Fにあるハッピーデリ。野菜やチキン、サラダのメニューが色々あり、私的にはワインのお供にオススメです。鎌倉駅から長谷に向う途中にある、サスケストア鎌倉はお惣菜もおいしく、新鮮なお野菜もいっぱい売っているので休日に行くことが多いです。あと由比ガ浜通りにあるかまくらむすび茶屋は、お店からも近いですし、お米もとてもおいしくボリューミー。気に入ってます。
