比企能員邸址 The Mansion of Hiki Yoshikazu

Updated: Jan 22, 2020

At the front gate of Myohonji temple and across from the Hiki kindergarten you will find a stone historical marker that reads:

Hiki Yoshikazu was an adopted son of Hiki no Zenni, who had been Minamoto no Yoritomo’s nurse as well as a Zen nun.  The name of this area, Hikigayatsu, means valley of the Hiki clan. Further, Yoshikazu’s daughter was also the wife of Yoriie.  Yoriie was the son of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Her name was Wakasa no Subone. She gave birth to a child named Ichiman. In 1203, Yoriie fell sick. His mother, Masako, who was also the wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, wanted him to divide his power with his brother, Senman. When Yoshikazu heard of this plan, he was secretly enraged and planned to get rid of the Hōjō clan.  However, he was discovered and Yoshikazu and the Hiki clan were consequently destroyed at this place.
